The 2,500-Year Nuad Thai Tradition
Traditional Thai massage — known in Thailand as Nuad Thai — is one of the world's oldest documented manual therapies. According to Buddhist texts, its origins trace back over 2,500 years to Jīvaka Komārabhacca, the personal physician to the Buddha, honoured in Thailand as the "Father Doctor" of traditional Thai medicine.
The tradition was preserved and codified at Wat Pho temple (Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram) in Bangkok. In 1832, King Rama III commissioned the engraving of 60 anatomical and therapeutic murals on the temple walls — now known as the Epigraphic Archives of Wat Pho and considered the most complete historical record of Nuad Thai.
On 12 December 2019, at the 14th session of UNESCO's Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Bogotá, Colombia, Nuad Thai was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. UNESCO defines it as "a non-medicinal remedy and manual therapy" involving bodily manipulation to rebalance the body, energy and structure.
How We Adapted It at Namm
Classical Nuad Thai is performed on a firm floor mat. At Namm Massage, our Thai massage is performed on the same wide, comfortable treatment bed we use for all other massage techniques — an adaptation chosen for guest comfort without compromising the core acupressure technique.
You change into a loose cotton Thai costume we provide, comfortable trousers and top that allow free movement. No oil is used.
Our therapists apply rhythmic acupressure with palms, fingers, and elbows, used at medium-to-deep pressure (levels 3 to 5 on our 5-level scale). Light stretching elements are included throughout. We do not use foot-walking pressure, knee compression, or the deep yoga-like stretches found in some classical schools — a deliberate adaptation that keeps the technique focused, therapeutic, and comfortable for international guests.

01
An Authentic Thai Cultural Experience
You came to Thailand — Thai massage is the most representative healing tradition you can experience here. Recognized by UNESCO in 2019 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Booking it once during your stay is a meaningful part of being in Phuket.
-
02
No Undressing, No Oil
You stay clothed in our loose Thai costume throughout the session. No oil to wash off, no residue on your clothes. Practical for guests going to dinner straight after, or those who simply prefer not to disrobe.
-
03
Deep Acupressure Effect
Thai acupressure with palms, fingers and elbows penetrates the muscle layers more directly than oil-based strokes. Released tension feels deeper than after a standard relaxation massage.
-
04
Light Stretching for Flexibility
The light stretching elements built into the session improve joint range of motion and release muscle tension that pure pressure work cannot reach. Especially valued by guests with desk-work stiffness or post-flight tightness.

An Alternative to Oil Massage
If you've had several oil-based massages during your trip and want something different, traditional Thai is the natural choice. Same setting, same therapists, same 5-level pressure scale — but a completely different technique.

First Time? Recommended Pressure
For first-time guests trying Thai massage we usually recommend starting at pressure level 3 — comfortable but enough to feel the technique work. Message us via WhatsApp
The Session — Stage by Stage
You arrive in your own clothing. We greet you, ask about pressure preference, and guide you to your private treatment room. The Thai costume is waiting for you — you'll change after the welcome ritual.
Stage 1 — Welcome foot wash & scrub. Every Namm session opens with the same ritual: a warm foot wash with a gentle scrub, using clean water and fresh towels. Hygiene first, and the first signal to the nervous system that the work has begun.
Stage 2 — Change into the Thai costume. Comfortable cotton trousers and a loose top that we provide. You remain modestly covered throughout the session.
Stage 3 — Settling onto the treatment bed. Wide, comfortable, the same bed used for all our other massage techniques. Fresh linen for every guest. Pressure level confirmed one more time before the session begins.
Stage 4 — Rhythmic palm acupressure. Broad, rhythmic pressure with full palms along the major muscle groups — back, shoulders, legs, arms. Sets the pace of the session and warms the deep tissue layers.
Stage 5 — Finger acupressure. Targeted thumb and finger pressure on dense knots and muscle attachment points. Used at medium-to-deep pressure (levels 3–5).
Stage 6 — Elbow work on dense areas. For deep tension areas — the upper trapezius, the gluteal region, the iliotibial band — elbow pressure penetrates further than palms or fingers can reach. Applied only at firm pressure levels, always with controlled force.
Stage 7 — Light stretching elements. Gentle range-of-motion work integrated throughout the session — shoulder rotations, hip opening, light spinal extension. Focused and brief, not the deep contortion-style stretches of some classical Thai schools.
Stage 8 — Finishing palm strokes. Closing rhythmic pressure to settle the nervous system. The body feels worked, lighter, and reset.
After the session — hot Thai herbal tea, cold water, and time to come back gradually before stepping into your day.

Traditional Thai massage (Nuad Thai) is an acupressure-based manual therapy with roots in Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhist tradition, practised in Thailand for over 2,500 years. It was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 12 December 2019. At Namm Massage we use the technique's core acupressure principles — applied with palms, fingers, and elbows — combined with light stretching, performed on our wide treatment bed without oil.
Classical Nuad Thai is traditionally performed on a firm floor mat. At Namm Massage we perform Thai massage on a wide, comfortable treatment bed — the same bed used for our other massage techniques. This adaptation makes the session more accessible for guests who would find a floor mat uncomfortable, while keeping the core acupressure technique intact.
No. You change into a loose Thai costume that we provide — comfortable cotton trousers and a top that allow the therapist to apply pressure and movement freely. No oil is used. Thai massage is one of the few massage formats where you remain fully clothed throughout.
Our therapists apply rhythmic acupressure with palms, fingers, and elbows — at medium-to-deep pressure levels (3 to 5 on our 5-level scale). Light stretching elements are included throughout the session. We do not use foot-walking pressure, knee compression, or the deep yoga-like stretches found in some classical Thai schools. The result is a focused, therapeutic acupressure session adapted to a Western-friendly format.
Thai acupressure goes deep — significantly deeper than oil-based relaxation massages. You will feel the work, especially on dense muscle areas. A properly performed session is intense but not painful, and never causes bruising. At Namm you choose the pressure level on a 5-level scale and can adjust at any moment. For first-time guests we typically recommend starting at level 3.
Yes — it is one of the most representative experiences of Thai culture, and the format (clothed, no oil, on a bed at Namm) is comfortable for most first-time guests. If you prefer something lighter for your first session, choose Aroma Hot Oil Massage. If you specifically want to experience an authentic Thai healing tradition adapted to boutique comfort, Thai massage is the choice.
Every Namm Massage session — Thai included — begins with a welcome foot wash with a gentle scrub, using warm water and clean towels. This is both hygiene and the first signal to the nervous system that the work is starting. After the foot wash, you change into the Thai costume and the session continues on the treatment bed.
Walk-in massage is welcome every day from 10:00 to 22:00. However, we recommend messaging us via WhatsApp at least a few hours ahead to guarantee your preferred time — especially during peak season and evenings.
