What Hot Stone Massage Actually Is
Hot stone massage combines two things: the sustained, penetrating warmth of heated volcanic stones and the manual work of a trained therapist using those same stones as massage tools. The result is a type of deep relaxation that hands alone cannot produce — the heat reaches into the muscle layers before the therapist even begins working.
The stones are basalt — a dense volcanic rock with high iron and magnesium content. This mineral composition is what gives basalt its ability to absorb and retain heat longer than other natural stones. The stones are heated in a professional stone warmer, then placed on key points of the body (along the spine, on the shoulders, in the palms, between the toes) and used as gliding massage tools with oil.
At Namm Massage the session uses over 10 basalt stones in rotation — as placed stones cool, they are replaced with freshly heated ones, keeping the warmth continuous throughout the session. Oil is applied to the skin (your choice of oil), and the therapist alternates between hand massage and stone massage, using the heated stone surface to deliver smooth, deep gliding strokes.
What It Is Not
Hot stone massage is not just "stones sitting on your back". Stone placement is one part of the technique, but the core of the session is active massage work using the heated stones as tools — long gliding strokes, circular kneading, pressure work along the muscle lines. The stones are instruments, not decoration.
It is also not a deep tissue massage. The heat from the stones allows the therapist to reach deep muscle layers with less manual pressure than a conventional deep tissue session. If you want intense pressure and trigger point work, Deep Tissue or Sport Massage is the better choice. Hot stone massage achieves depth through warmth, not force.
This is a 90-minute minimum session. We do not offer 60 minutes for hot stone massage — proper stone work requires time to heat the body progressively, rotate stones, and work through all major muscle groups. Rushing it compromises the result.

01
Deep Muscle Relaxation Without Heavy Pressure
The sustained heat from basalt stones warms the muscle tissue from the surface inward, allowing the therapist to work into deeper layers without the strong manual pressure of a deep tissue session. Ideal for guests who want depth but find heavy pressure uncomfortable.
-
02
Chronic Tension & Stiffness
Persistent tightness in the back, shoulders, or neck responds well to sustained heat. The warmth softens contracted muscle fibres before the therapist works them — the combination is more effective than either heat or massage alone.
-
03
A Sensory Experience
The weight and warmth of basalt stones on the body creates a grounding sensation that many guests describe as uniquely calming. If you're looking for something beyond a standard oil massage — a session that feels like an event — hot stone is the choice.
-
04
Cold Weather & Air-Conditioned Stiffness
Spending days in heavily air-conditioned spaces (hotels, malls, restaurants) can leave muscles tight and contracted. Hot stone massage counteracts this directly — restoring warmth and flexibility to cold-stiffened tissue.
-
05
Stress & Sleep Quality
The combination of sustained warmth, stone weight, and slow massage rhythm produces deep parasympathetic response — many guests fall asleep during the session. Commonly booked as an evening session before bed.

The Session — Stage by Stage
Every session begins with a brief consultation — your therapist asks about tension areas, pressure preference, and any contraindications. You'll be guided to your private treatment room where the stone warmer is already prepared.
Stage 1 — Oil application & warm-up. Your therapist applies massage oil (your choice) and begins with hand effleurage — light warming strokes to prepare the skin and muscles for the heat of the stones.
Stage 2 — Stone placement. Heated basalt stones are placed on key points: along both sides of the spine, on the shoulders, and on other areas depending on your tension map. The weight and warmth begin softening the deep muscle layers immediately.
Stage 3 — Stone massage strokes. Your therapist takes heated stones and uses them as massage tools — long, smooth gliding strokes along the back, legs, arms, and shoulders. The heated stone surface delivers warmth deep into the tissue with each stroke. As stones cool, they are returned to the warmer and replaced with fresh ones.
Stage 4 — Hand massage on heated tissue. Once the muscles are warmed and softened by the stones, your therapist switches to hand techniques — kneading, pressure work, and circular strokes on the pre-heated tissue. The muscles respond with less resistance than in a cold start.
Stage 5 — Rotation & repeat. The stone-and-hand cycle continues through all major muscle groups. Stones are continuously rotated from the warmer to maintain consistent temperature throughout the session.
Stage 6 — Finishing sequence. Final stone placement on the back for a resting phase, followed by light effleurage to close. By this stage the body feels deeply warm, heavy, and released.
After the session — hot Thai herbal tea, cold water, and time to come back slowly before returning to your day.

Basalt — a dense volcanic rock with high iron and magnesium content. Basalt is the industry standard for hot stone massage because its mineral composition allows it to absorb and retain heat significantly longer than other natural stones. The stones are smooth, flat, and shaped to fit the contours of the body and to work as massage tools in the therapist's hands.
No. The stones are heated to a controlled temperature in a professional stone warmer and tested by the therapist before every placement. The sensation should be comfortably hot — never burning or sharp. If any stone feels too warm at any moment, tell your therapist immediately and it will be adjusted or replaced. Oil on the skin also acts as a temperature buffer.
Hot stone massage is contraindicated for: pregnancy, varicose veins, cardiovascular conditions (uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease), diabetes with neuropathy or reduced skin sensation, blood clotting disorders or use of blood-thinning medication, open wounds or cuts or skin infections, active eczema or psoriasis flare-ups, sunburn, recent surgery, fever or acute illness, and being under the influence of alcohol. If any of these apply, please inform us before booking — we will recommend an alternative massage type.
Hot stone massage requires time to properly heat the body, rotate stones as they cool, and work through all major muscle groups with both stones and hands. 60 minutes is not enough to complete this process without rushing — and a rushed hot stone session loses the benefit. 90 minutes is the minimum for a complete full-body experience.
Regular oil massage uses the therapist's hands, forearms, and elbows. Hot stone massage adds heated basalt stones as both passive heat sources (placed on the body) and active massage tools (used for gliding strokes). The sustained heat from the stones warms the muscle tissue from outside in, allowing deeper relaxation with less manual pressure. The sensation is distinctly different — heavier, warmer, and more grounding.
90 minutes — complete full-body hot stone massage, the most popular choice. Covers back, shoulders, legs, arms, and neck with both stone and hand work. 120 minutes — extended session with more time on each area, additional focus on tension zones, and a longer finishing phase. Choose 120 if you want an unhurried, fully immersive experience or have specific areas that need extra attention.
We recommend booking hot stone massage via WhatsApp at least a few hours ahead — the stone warmer needs preparation time. Walk-ins are possible if equipment is available, but advance booking guarantees your preferred time. Open daily 10:00 to 22:00.
